If you’re using Fuzzy Dates (like a quarter, year, or decade) for your memories, then when you use the “Date Taken” filter those memories will still show up under a specific date — even if you didn’t assign one.
Why? Behind the scenes, our system gives each photo a hidden date so it knows where to place it in a timeline.
🗓️ For example:
- If you assign a photo as “1990” (just the year), it will appear under January 1, 1990 when sorting by Date Taken.
- A photo assigned as “1990s” (a decade) show under January 1, 1990, too — at the very start of that range.
In both cases, the photo will appear on the Date Taken list on the same date (Jan 1, 1990) since that's the earliest start to that time range. This will also be the same date shown on the file when you download with metadata. But if you right-click on the photo, or click in to the lightbox to see the Info panel, it will confirm you've assigned it a FOREVER® fuzzy date.
Alternative Options for Dates
You can use one of these options to be able to better control where your memories appear on the Date Taken listing, so they show more accurate to where you'd expect to find them.
- To hide that auto-assigned date from showing above the photo you can add the memory to an Album or Tag, then use Custom Sort.
- To place it exactly where you want in the Date Taken list simply choose a more refined fuzzy date (like a quarter and year instead of just the year), otherwise assign a more specific date (like month and day).
QUICK TIP: You can also create a Tag to place on memories you're not entirely sure the date of yet, but want to go back to update once you're sure. For example, a tag named "Edit Date Taken" or "Approximate Date" can help you and others viewing these shared memories in the future!
