In order to use the Facial Recognition tool in Historian you have to do two things – purchase Historian 6 because Facial Recognition does not work in Trial Mode, and choose “Enable facial recognition” when setting up your cabinet.
Once both of those criteria are met, you have three options for using the Facial Recognition tool: when importing your photos, by selecting a photo, or manually choosing the face to tag.
Running Facial Recognition when importing your photos
Whether you are importing from your camera, phone, a file, or your FOREVER Account, you can select the check box “Run facial recognition on imported images” and the software will detect faces and suggest tags to assign to each face. You will need to confirm the suggestion, select a different face tag, create a new face tag, or ignore the face as part of the import process.
From camera, phone, or file:
1. In the Home ribbon of the Media Library, click the input device (camera/phone, scanner, files).
2. Navigate to the folder that has the files you want to import.
3. Click on “Import Options” in the Select items to import window.
4. Click the box next to “Run facial recognition on imported images.”
5. Click “OK” in the Import options window.
6. Click “Open” in the Select items to import window.
From your FOREVER Account:
1. In the Home ribbon of the Media Library, click “Forever.”
2. Navigate to the files in your Gallery, Album, or Tag.
3. Choose the files you want to download to Historian and click “Import.”
4. After the download process is complete, click the box next to “Run facial recognition on imported images,” then click “OK.”
Assigning face tags to photos that are already imported
1. Select a photo.
2. Look for the detected faces in the Item Properties tab on the right.
3. Confirm the suggestion, select a different face tag, create a new face tag, or ignore the face right in the Item Properties panel.
Updated face tags:
4. When applying face tags to photos that are already imported, you will need to assign the tags on one photo at a time.
Manually choosing a face to tag
Sometimes, the face detection part of the tool will miss a face. Maybe the person is turned too far away from the camera, or maybe the face was partially obscured by something in the photo. You can still assign a face tag to these people.
1. Double-click the image to open it in the Image Editor.
2. Click on the “Face” tool in the Image ribbon.
3. Click and drag from the center of the face you want to tag to the outer edges of the face.
4. Select an existing face tag or create a new face tag in the Add a manual face tag window.
5. Click “OK” to save the face tag assignment to this face.
6. Manual face tags must be assigned on one photo at a time.
