Congratulations on the new computer! This article will walk you through the three main steps to move Historian™ and your memories over. This includes Backing Up from the Old Computer, Installing Historian on the New Computer, and then Reopening your Memories.
Backing Up from the Old Computer
The first step you need to take before you move your Historian software to a new computer is to make a backup copy of your memories (called the "vault" for Historian 4, or "cabinet" for Historian 6) onto an external hard drive. This will allow you to transfer your memories to your new computer!
- To find the location of your memories so that you can make a copy, open Historian™ on your old computer so you can view the location of your vault/cabinet from the Welcome screen (the first screen you see when you open Historian). Typically, vaults/cabinets are saved in this location for most Historian users: C:\Users\Public\Documents
- Now that you have located your vault/cabinet, close out of Historian and plug an external hard drive into your old computer.
- Open your File Explorer and browse to that location noted in step 1. Once you locate your vault/cabinet you can right-click on the folder and click “Copy”.
- In the File Explorer next navigate to your external hard drive and click “Paste."
NOTE: Depending on the size of your vault/cabinet this process could take several minutes, so please make sure the computer does NOT go to sleep during this time. - Now that your memories have been copied to your external hard drive, you need to uninstall Historian from your old computer. To uninstall Historian go to your Windows Settings then choose Apps, find Historian from this list and click the “Uninstall” button.

Reopening Your Memories on the New Computer
If you plan to use your vault/cabinet from the external hard drive, you can skip steps 2-3.
- Plug your external hard drive your vault/cabinet was copied to into the new computer.
- Open the new computer's File Explorer and navigate to the external hard drive, you'll then right-click your vault/cabinet folder and "Copy" it.
- Navigate to the location on the new computer you want your memories to live. The default location is C:\Users\Public\Public Documents. Once there, click "Paste".
NOTE: Depending on the size of your vault/cabinet this process could take several minutes, so please make sure the computer does NOT go to sleep during this time. - With Historian open to the Welcome screen, at the top click "Open Another Cabinet" (for Historian 4 it will be "Open Another Vault").
- In the pop-up window navigate to the location your memories are. Single click the vault/cabinet folder (DO NOT go into the folder) then choose "Select Folder" to open your memories.
