Need help with Artisan® 6? Check out this article.
We suggest using this easy checklist to ensure all important Historian™ content is backed up and doing this every so often as you continue to work in the software. This is especially useful if you are getting ready to move your cabinet(s) to a new computer.
We suggest backing up:
- Cabinet / Vault
- User Dictionary
If you are moving Historian to a new computer, you can follow these steps for installing the software.
Cabinet / Vault
The first step you need to take before you move your Historian software to a new computer is to make a backup copy of your memories (called the "cabinet" for Historian 6 or "vault" for Historian 4) onto an external hard drive. This will allow you to transfer your memories to your new computer!
You can either make an official Backup or create a Shadow Copy, otherwise read on to get a full version of your current working cabinet copied over.
To find the location of your memories so that you can make a copy, open Historian on your old computer. From the Welcome screen (the first screen you see when you open Historian) it should be listed here. Typically, cabinets are saved in the default C:\Users\Public\Documents
Now that you have located your cabinet, close out of Historian and follow these steps to back up:
- Plug an external hard drive into your computer
- Open your File Explorer and browse to where your cabinet is located
- Right-click on the entire folder and copy it
- Navigate to your external hard drive and paste here
NOTE: Depending on the size of your vault/cabinet this process could take several minutes, so please make sure the computer does NOT go to sleep during this time
If you are moving to a new computer, you can follow this article for installing and bringing the cabinet over. For other options on backing up your memories you can read this article.
