If you notice red "+" marks on your photos in Historian™, it typically indicates that the thumbnail has become corrupted. This can happen for various reasons, but the good news is that it can often be fixed within the software.
Scenario 1: Thumbnail Is Grayed Out, But the Image Still Opens
If the thumbnail is grayed out, but you can still view the photo by double-clicking on it, follow these steps to resolve the issue:
-
Click on "File" in the top-left corner of the screen.
-
Select "Properties."
-
In the left-hand menu, click "Support."
-
Click “Clear Thumbnail,” then click “OK.”
- Close and reopen Historian - the program will regenerate the thumbnails for your photos.
📌 Note: This process may take some time depending on the size of your photo library.
Scenario 2: The Image Doesn’t Open at All
If you cannot view the image when you double-click it:
-
Open Historian and go in to your Media Library.
- Click into the Cabinet ribbon at the top (or Vault ribbon if in Historian 4).
-
Run a Health Check to check what might be wrong - if there are issues with the files themselves then do a Troubleshoot and Fix to attempt repairs.
-
If the image is still not viewable, you will need to recover the photo from a backup source.
